Why Arise is urgently needed (Facts & Stats)

The Hard Truth
1 in 5 youth aging out of foster care becomes homeless as soon as they turn 18. Many are discharged without any financial support, family connection, or safe housing.
By age 25, over 36% of young women who age out of care will have experienced homelessness, couch-surfing, or housing insecurity.
Girls transitioning out of state care or juvenile systems frequently find themselves returning to the same nvironments that once caused them harm — or entering homelessness with little support or stability.
Many of these girls are not "eligible" for emergency adult shelters and feel unsafe in co-ed or general homeless populations.
DCF-involved girls who turn 18 are often "emancipated" without warning or support — forced to figure out housing, employment, and survival overnight.
Why These Young Women Are at Risk
Too old for foster care, but too young, unprepared, or unsupported to live independently
Victims of childhood trauma, neglect, or abuse
Without intervention, these young women are at high risk of:
-
Sexual exploitation
-
Chronic homelessness
-
Early parenthood without support
-
Mental health crises
-
Returning to the criminal legal system
-
Lifelong poverty or housing instability

Intersectionality & Inequity
Black and Latinx young women are overrepresented in DCF and DYS systems and underrepresented in transitional support services.
LGBTQ+ youth, especially young Black girls, are at higher risk of being kicked out by families and experiencing homelessness.
80% of young women in DYS custody have experienced physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.
The Gap ARISE Fills
ARISE is one of the only programs designed for this specific population — young women ages 18–25 who are:
Aging out of foster care or DCF
Leaving DYS or juvenile detention
Kicked out or rejected by family
Homeless with no safe place to go
In need of healing, skills, and stable housing
Without programs like ARISE, these young women are left to navigate adult life with no home, no family, no support system, and no safety net.
ARISE steps in when no one else will — offering home, healing, and hope.
